Shiatsu is a Japanese treatment and healing method with origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and which has been in existence for more than 2000 years. The word Shiatsu combines the meaning of shi (finger) and atsu (pressure). The therapist applies varying amounts of pressure using his fingers, palms, elbows and arms on different energetic points and areas on the body. The treatment consists of flexing, stretching and performing diverse manipulations to move, strengthen and channel the life energy (Qi) in our body while dissolving stagnations. During the treatment, the therapist uses his body weight, not force, and the movement is relatively rhythmical and the touch always sensitive to the physical feedback. Shiatsu is effective in preventing the development of diseases and strengthening the body's immune system. It is also beneficial in the treatment of chronic disorders such as digestive problems, back pain, headaches, tensions, and more. In addition, treatments can help pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy and can relieve nausea, sciatica, edema and swollenness.
In Japan, Shiatsu is fully integrated into the health system together with other methods such as acupuncture, Tuina and herbal medicine. TCM methods can also be found in many orthopaedic, oncological, obstetric and mental health departments around the world.
The treatment is traditionally performed on a futon mattress while the patient is fully dressed. However, it can also be performed on a massage table if the patient prefers.
